A Kool Breeze Solar Hat is like no other hat in the world. It is a tightly woven natural weave hat that keeps you cool when it’s hot… First, sunlight hits the cell mounted on the top of the hat. Electricity is produced by a protected motor mount on the hat crown along with a lightweight PVC air guided fan that begins to spin when the motor is energized by sunlight. The fan then fills the hat with cooling air, venting it both throughout the hat's weave and out the back through an exit port.

The Environmental Protection Agency, Surgeon General and The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends wearing a wide brimmed hat as part of an overall sun protection program to help protect against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

Your head alone can perspire as much as all the rest of your body, as that is the first place your heart pumps the blood. In fact, your head is responsible for some 20% of the body's heat output, which is why covering your head in the winter works so well. In the hot months, the reverse is true. Natural perspiration produced by your scalp, with a little breeze of air, can be evaporated to produce cooling for your head and the rest of the body. Pros
  • + The hat is generally a quality product, with sturdy straw hat construction.
  • + The fan/solar panel combination is sensitive and quickly responds to exposure to direct sunlight.
  • + I was pleasantly surprised at the RPMs of the fan in sunlight. It provides a constant light breeze across the top of the head on a hot, sunny day.
Cons
  • - My first disappointment was opening the shipping box when the hat arrived. The front three inches of the brim was bent upward because it was shipped in a box too small for the hat!!!
  • (If I would have known I was going to have the opportunity to do a Product Review, and submit photos, I certainly would have taken pictures of the hat in the box with the bent brim when it arrived.)
  • - I ordered a Small sized hat, but had to wire in a length of thick bungee cord under the headband in the back to prevent the hat from resting on the top of my ears!

Only complaint is that it's slightly larger than anticipated.

My husband wears a medical device on his head and needs to keep his head cool when in the sun or it overheats. This hat has been a major contributor to our ability to go for a walk, attend a concert, and work in the yard. So glad that it had size options as we needed to order a larger diameter -- and it fits really well. We get asked about this hat a lot and are happy to share info about it as it's worked for us.

My husband wears Optune in his head which is a wearable device for brain cancer. He can wear this hat over the electrodes and keep them cool since an alarm sounds when they get too hot.
It works well for him when in the sun!

I ordered this hat for my husband (large head!) and sadly it was too small. The fan works great and the hat is very good quality, just wish you made one a tad larger. We gave it to a good friend and he's thoroughly enjoying it.

Yrs ago in Texas I had a pith hat with a solar fan and panel on it. I’d mow our lawns about every
10 days, and that hat kept my head cool and comfortable, When I saw the cowboy hat with the solar gear on it, I couldn’t resist one. We now live at 7800’ in western New Mexico and are surrounded by
Large cattle ranches, so why not join in the fun. This puppy keeps the sun off my face and neck, which is a big plus. Try one, you’ll love it.

The fan makes plenty of power but the exhaust port on the back of the hat is too small to let the hot air out rapidly. Could use at least two more ports of the same size.
